PBL and Jelly: The Apple Orchard! --Project Based Learning Activities

If you can't take your students to an apple orchard, bring the apple orchard to the playground. This PBL and Jelly includes four separate activities for students to create an apple orchard that intertwine early literacy skills, artistic design, problem-solving, and using imagination to further learning.

The PBL can last anywhere from 45-90 minutes in length depending on the grade level. Most pages can take between 15-30 minutes to complete, including the writing, drawing, and discussions.

There is also a sample of how this can be used 4 or 5 days of the week, along with additional items and activities that can be used teach students. These PBL and Jelly Activities can be used as whole class lesson or for independent work.

Companion Texts
Each PBL has a recommended companions texts that could be read to the class at the beginning of the lesson. Or these same books could be available for students to look through. Many of these books can be found in the library and even online.

Individualized Learning
One of the key tenants of project based learning is allowing the students to drive their learning. That’s why these focus on allowing students to make their own choices. By the end of each activity students will have completed a version that is unique and their own, based on their own abilities.

Multiple Content Areas
Project Based Learning includes multiple content areas (ELA, math, social studies, science) and these are no exception. They allow teachers to incorporate multiple content areas into a single lesson such as spiraling writing and science together or reading and social studies. Plus there’s the need for students to practice problem solving, making connections, collaborating with classmates, and sharing their findings (or creations).
