    Students will learn to write effective sentences and paragraphs.

    MINI-LESSONS: Complete sentences using subjects and predicates, fragments, run-on sentences with FANBOYS chart, topic sentences, relevant details, transition words, and closing sentences.

    2: NARRATIVE WRITING

    Students will learn to write an expressive narrative. A comparison of narratives and personal narratives is included to show how to use the lessons for both types of writing.

    MINI-LESSONS: Narrative elements, brainstorming, graphic organizers, determining task, purpose, audience, and theme, plot (exposition, antagonist/protagonist, internal/external conflict, rising and falling action, climax, and resolution), developing character and actions, using dialogue, strategies to write a rough draft and forming a writing goal, D.A.R.E. to Revise (Delete, Add details and transition words, Rearrange, Exchange for a strong lead, better word choice, sentence variety, strong conclusion), C.U.P.S. to Edit (Rules for Capitalization, Usage, Punctuation, Spelling), writing a title, peer reflection, and final copy strategies.

    3: ARGUMENTATIVE WRITING

    Students will learn to write a compelling argument.

    MINI-LESSONS: Argumentative elements, argumentative strategies including warrants and rebuttals, types of claims, brainstorming, graphic organizers, determining task, purpose, audience, and formal style, writing an introduction, body, and conclusion, how to strengthen claims, how to take notes, avoid plagiarism, and cite credible sources, types of evidence, strategies to write a rough draft and writing goal, D.A.R.E. to Revise (Delete, Add details and transition words, clauses and phrases, Rearrange, Exchange for a strong lead, better keyword choice, sentence variety, strong conclusion), C.U.P.S. to Edit (Rules for Capitalization, Usage, Punctuation, Spelling), writing a title, peer reflection, and final copy strategies.

    4: INFORMATIVE WRITING

    Students will learn how to research facts and information effectively. (Directions for a research assignment are included.)

    MINI-LESSONS: Informative elements, organizational structures, brainstorming, graphic organizers, determining task, purpose, audience, and formal style, writing an introduction, body, and conclusion, how to take notes, avoid plagiarism, and cite credible sources, types of evidence, types of relevant facts, using graphics, headings, picture captions, table of contents and glossary, strategies to write a rough draft and writing goal, D.A.R.E. to Revise (Delete, Add details and transition words, clauses and phrases, Rearrange, Exchange for a strong lead, better keyword choice, sentence variety, strong conclusion), C.U.P.S. to Edit (Rules for Capitalization, Usage, Punctuation, Spelling), writing a title, peer reflection, and final copy strategies.

    5: BRAINSTORMING IDEAS

    Start with brainstorming ideas for the year! There is an interest inventory and interactive pages for (I Love, I Wonder, My Family, and My Feelings).

    6: STUDENT RESOURCE GUIDE

    Students will have many skills and idea lists at their fingertips when writing. Make a copy for your writing center, or give one to each student!

    7: WRITING PROCESS POSTERS

    Display this for students to get a visual of their steps to write effective essays.
