Students will learn about owls and how they fit into the ecosystem and food web. Students will learn about adaptations that owls have that help them to survive.

Description

Owl Pellet Lab: Students will be engaged with this hands-on Owl Pellet lab and an informational text article on owls. Students will learn about owl adaptations and behavior. They will learn about how owls fit into the ecosystem. This resource includes a 5 E Inquiry based hands-on lesson on owl pellets, a several day CLOSE reading lesson using informational text, a 3 page informational text article, folds for interactive notebooks and worksheets for both the pellet lesson and the Informational text reading lesson. Includes Interesting reading passages with comprehension questions.

Students will learn about owls and their adaptations for survival. They will learn about owls place in the food chain and role in the ecosystem.

This resource is designed to address the Disciplinary Core Ideas for NGSS Ecosystem: Interactions, Energy and dynamics and Molecules to Organisms: Structure and Processes.

This resource also includes both a SMART board sort and a paper version of that sort for teachers who do not have a SMART board. The sort is self-checking in both versions.

This resource includes sorting cards for making a food chain with owls and discussing the flow of energy.

This resource includes text-dependent comprehension questions and lots of flaps and folds for interactive notebooks. It is aligned with NGSS Life science for 4th and 5th grade and CCSS 3rd, 4th and 5th grade for reading informational text. This unit is designed for 4th grade animal adaptions and 5th grade flow of energy but could easily be adjusted to other grade levels and other topics such as predator/prey, food chains and habitats.
