Description

Looking for an easy-to-work-with source of informational text to use for close reading or outlining practice?

These four original informational text passages are specially designed to be used to teach outlining. Articles range from 430 to 770 words -- typically one to two pages long. Lexiles of articles range from 900 - 1100, making their text complexity a good fit for grades 6 - 8.

Each article comes with an answer key outline that can be built from the information in the article. However, outlining certainly isn't the only use for these articles -- they'd be great for close reading lessons, too! The articles are designed with subheadings and extra-wide spacing and margins to leave room for highlighting and annotating.

The topics of these four articles are ones that my middle-schoolers have found very interesting. Here's what you will receive in this PDF resource:

●Four nonfiction articles of various lengths and lexiles, including the following:

-- Are Dog Beds Necessary?
-- A Spicy Story: The History of Spices
-- Once Upon a Time: A Brief History of Clocks
-- Complaining v. Whining: What's the Difference?

●An answer key for each article -- which takes the form of a suggested outline for each article's contents.

●Information on how I use these articles as a practice activity after I have taught lessons on how to outline.

Just between us -- I'll admit I wrote that last article on "Complaining v. Whining" with an ulterior motive in mind . While the article will make your students better informed, I can't guarantee they'll be better about their whining. It does make for interesting conversation, however!!

Outlining is a skill that directly supports development of the skills noted in CCSS ELA Literacy Standard 2 in Informational Text, which asks students to determine the main idea of a text, chart its development, and explain its relationship to other ideas.

If you need more outlining resources -- such as PowerPoint lessons on how to outline or additional outlining practice activities, please check out the following:

Outlining PowerPoints + Informational Articles bundles the four articles here with two PowerPoints on outlining for research writing and outlining for notetaking.

Outlining MegaBundle of PowerPoints, Activities, and Informational Text. contains the PowerPoints, articles AND an activity that is designed to help students understand 'hierarchy' and the fundamentals of outlining prior to outlining articles on their own. You can view and purchase items individually, in smaller bundle combinations, or as an entire mega-bundle!
