Description
Say goodbye to making kids memorize sight words! There's a new and improved way to teach students when HFW have irregular parts. There are LOTS of HFWs that are 100% "codeable" that means able to read and able to spell like (and, can, him, dad, mom, best, just, etc) and for those words we will ask students to rely on their phonics sound knowledge to independently spell words like these, where every letter is doing exactly what it's supposed to do, each letter and it's sound is "regular."
Use this 9-step sound-symbol-meaning-spelling process to hard wire words in a mental process called Orthographic Mapping (not just irregular HFW but any words) and their correct spelling in the brain. Memorizing words takes 5-500 repetitions. Sound Symbol Mappings takes 1-4 repetitions.
Make copies or laminate mats for:
2 phoneme words (why, high, eight)
3 phoneme words (said, come, have, laugh)
4 phoneme words (only, enough, weather)
5 phoneme words (shrimp, stripe, wouldn't)
