Description
I love to use this activity on the first day of class because it gives the teacher a break for talking about the syllabus and procedures, and the kids LOVE it. Even though it's perfect for a 1st day of school activity, it would also work well as a hook or scaffold for teaching inferencing skills with longer and more challenging texts.
Students will read a short story called "Ordeal by Cheque" by Wuther Crue (1932) that is a story composed of ENTIRELY OF CHECKS. First of all, kids don't see many checks these days, but second of all, what a fun alternative to the traditional narrative structure! The unique format really piques students' interest, and they have to use their inferencing skills to connect the dots and follow the plot line that can go in so many different directions!
In this resource, there are four steps (for pairs or individuals) that go with the story -- comprehension questions, timeline, analytical questions, and a narrative response. There are multiple versions (Google Docs or Google Slides) that can be printed or assigned digitally, and all are 100% editable.
This activity usually takes up about 45 minutes of the first day of class, and during that time, I can circulate the room, conference with small groups, and really start to foster the collaborative learning environment that I want in my classroom. To finish all of the activities in this resource, students would need to finish up the narrative response for homework or some additional class time.
Please note, this product does not include the story story "Ordeal by Cheque," but it is easily accessible with a quick Google search!
