What educators are saying

Great resource for my students to work on open and closed syllable. Great visual to use with my kids.
This is a great activity if you have students who know this concept and just need to put it to practice.

Description

Are your students having a hard time with open and closed syllables? Use these houses to help! Perfect for your Science of Reading Lessons. Open the house door to show an open syllable, close the door to show a closed syllable.

What is included?

Two posters with definitions to post in your classroom

19 syllable houses to practice short and long sounds of e, i, and o

HOW TO USE THEM:

Print out the houses and cut up the left hand side of the door and across the top of the door. Fold the door back so it opens and closes. Explain what an open or closed syllable is, and have students practice reading the words.

OPEN SYLLABLE: The door is open. The vowel can shout its name!

me, we, be, he, hi, go, so

CLOSED SYLLABLE: The door is closed. The vowel is still shouting its name but since the door is closed its voice is muffled and all we hear is the short vowel sound.

Words included:

web, wed, bed, bet, Ben, hem, hen, meg, men, met, wet, hit, hip, him gob got, sob, sot nod, not.
