A Little Bit About Open Syllables and Closed Syllables

What are they?

Open Syllable: If there is NO consonant after the vowel, the vowel will say its long sound (the door is OPEN).

Closed Syllable: If there is a consonant after the vowel, the vowel will say its short sound (the door is CLOSED).

Why do we teach them?

Knowing when a syllable is open or closed will help kids know if they will say a vowel's long or short sound! This is incredibly helpful when we start reading multisyllabic words (words with more than one syllable!).
