They invite students to apply what they have learned while using their problem solving, reasoning, critical thinking, and communication skills to solve a given problem.

These 3rd grade open ended math questions provide students daily opportunities to go beyond just basic practice of grade level math concepts and skills. They challenge students to think deeper, make connections, and expand their thinking.

5 REASONS TEACHERS LOVE THIS RESOURCE:

► The open-ended problems are great for fast finishers because all of the problems have more than one possible response.

► The problems differentiate themselves because of the nature of open-ended problems. For example, some students may come up with one answer and other students may come up with ten or more answers during the same time period. They are all working on the same task, but are working at the level that is most appropriate for them.

► These problems are aligned to the Common Core standards and help your students build a deeper understanding of the math concepts and skills by having them explore problems and dig deeper. It also gives students the opportunity to practice and fine tune their problems solving, reasoning, critical thinking, and communication skills.

► It can serve as a consistent math center, so your students can easily learn the routine and it practically runs itself. It fits within the guided math workshop framework and daily 3 framework.

► This print and go resource requires no additional materials, which makes it great for emergency sub plans.

Tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes. Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals in minutes, e.g., by representing the problem on a number line diagram.
Measure and estimate liquid volumes and masses of objects using standard units of grams (g), kilograms (kg), and liters (l). Add, subtract, multiply, or divide to solve one-step word problems involving masses or volumes that are given in the same units, e.g., by using drawings (such as a beaker with a measurement scale) to represent the problem.
Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several categories. Solve one- and two-step “how many more” and “how many less” problems using information presented in scaled bar graphs. For example, draw a bar graph in which each square in the bar graph might represent 5 pets.
Generate measurement data by measuring lengths using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch. Show the data by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in appropriate units-whole numbers, halves, or quarters.
Recognize area as an attribute of plane figures and understand concepts of area measurement.
