Perfect for distance learning and/or meeting the needs of students with accommodated IEP expectations, the digital version of the original unit was created for use with Google Slides™️ and can be used on password-protected learning platforms such as Google Classroom or Brightspace.

This resource has been created with an eye to the Big Ideas and Concepts of Disciplinary Thinking highlighted in the curriculum. The entire unit revolves around the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, as students explore how these rights are protected or violated in Canada and in the global community.

Teachers can teach ONE lesson to both grades, using an inquiry approach. Both grades examine how governments, organizations and individuals actively deal with important issues. Students and teachers learn together about the issues surrounding the Syrian Refugee Crisis and examine how the Canadian government and NGOs deal with these issues on the global stage (meeting Grade 6 expectations) and how federal, provincial/territorial, and municipal governments, groups and individual citizens work together to help the Syrian refugees who have come to settle in Canada (Grade 5 expectations).

Students then form Expert Groups to examine other issues. Both Grade 5 and Grade 6 students look at the overall themes of a) Education, b) Clean Water c) Disaster Response. However, Grade 5 students explore how Canada and Canadians respond to the topic within Canada (ie. First Nations Water Issues) while the Grade 6 students explore the same topic internationally (ie. Clean Water for Haiti).

NOTE: AS OF DEC. 4, 2023 THERE ARE 10 INQUIRY ISSUES FOR STUDENTS TO DELVE INTO.

    1. First Nations Education
    2. Education in Afghanistan
    3. First Nations Water
    4. Clean Water in Haiti
    5. Lac Megantic Train Derailment
    6. Asian Tsunami
    7. Ottawa-Area Tornados
    8. Ukraine Crisis
    9. Covid-19 Pandemic
    10. Human Rights (New for 2023)

Students learn to look at the people, places, and events surrounding these issues as they:

✔ determine which people, places, and events are most significant.

explore the causes and consequences of events and actions.

✔ learn about the interrelationships between levels of government, NGOs, and individual Canadian citizens.

✔ explore issues from various perspectives.

explore patterns and trends to see similarities between the issues.

A key component of this unit is the Knowledge Building Circle where the Expert Groups come together to share information and ideas, and to build on the ideas of one another. The joyful part of this is that YOU don’t need to be the source of all knowledge; you’re part of the learning journey.

    Frequently Asked Questions:

What will I need to assign this resource to my students?

    You will require:

    ❶ Access to the internet

    ❷ A Google Drive Account

Why should I consider purchasing this printable + digital bundle, instead of just one version?

The digital resources completely align with the regular units. This makes it extremely easy to meet IEP accommodations for specific students with little effort on your part.

✔ The digital resources are paperless, which is perfect if your school administrator is asking you to cut down on photocopying!

✔ The printable (pdf) version contains the full 3-part lesson plans.

✔ The saturated, full-colour interactive slides are engaging for students.

✔ The bundle makes it easy to transition between in-class and distance learning.

✔ It's just fun to use!

    Can I edit this resource?

I have left 95% of the texts in the digital version in editable form for two reasons:

➀ to ensure that studentscano use Google Read & Write with the activities.

➁ to allow teachers to edit texts and tasks when they feel it suitable for their class or to address IEP accommodations for specific students.

How do I collect student work for the digital version?

Your students will simply complete their own copies of the lessons, and turn them into your platform (ie. Google Classroom).

My school board won't allow direct access to my board Google Drive Account. How can I work around this?

If your school board doesn't allow direct access, you can use a personal Google Drive account and then share the folder with your board account OR contact me directly and I can provide forced copy links for you. The easiest of those two options is to use a personal Google Drive account!

I have additional questions. Can I email you directly?

Yes, you are welcome to email me directly at:

    coachsteachingcorner@gmail.com.

As always, you can use the Q & A section on any of my product pages to reach me as well.
