Onomatopoeia Poems

What are onomatopoeia poems? 

They are poems that make use of onomatopoeia, those words that sound like what they describe…for example: bang, boom, crash, tinkle, crinkle, pop, crack, sizzle, and so many more. These words paint both a visual and a sound picture for the reader.

About the Poems:

There are 8 poems. You can have your child simply identify the onomatopoeia in each poem by highlighting the words. Practice fluency and reading with expression and discuss what these words mean by reading it in context. Then have the students color the pictures

There is also a version of each poem where students can practice visualizing the poem. Instead of coloring, the students can illustrate the poem.

Follow-up Activities:

A follow up page for students to reflect back on the onomatopoeia that were used in each poem. They practice the words by writing a sentence using the featured onomatopoeia
