Shrinking the National Debt:1% at a time!

Have you ever asked your students to solve a national crisis? The 1% campaign is an easy, effective way to have students make an impact on their future! It’s the ideal community service project!

THIS DOWNLOAD IS FREE and editable!

It's Easy-- No money to collect. No receipts to write. No products to deliver. Simply inform your community of your goals - and ask them to "give 1%” on the pay.gov website.

What is 1%? It's different for everyone! For some, it is 1% of their income; others may give 1% of $100. The participating individual decides how much. Participants submit their contribution directly to the national debt on the pay.gov website.

Student participation: Students spread the word of shrinking the national debt. Each person who agrees to give 1%, may honor a military hero with a tag. Students can make posters, collect pledges, promote those who pledge, challenge other schools, and more. Additionally, students can brainstorm ways to make the campaign more successful (ideas below).

What better way to honor the United States of America and the future? Let's face it, there are all sorts of ice bucket challenges, Go Fund me pages, and fund raisers. Isn't solving the national debt the greatest community service endeavor?

This project is the brainchild of my twin seventh-graders whose teacher was searching for a community service project. Their teacher decided to have the class raise funds (by selling homemade bracelets) to give a loan to a family in need. Our family started discussing the pros and cons of community service projects. When we talked about our ideal campaign, we discussed various important factors:
o A goal that matters to American students
o A goal that makes a difference to American students
o A campaign that allows you to give as much or as little as you wish
o Little work for the teacher
o Creativity and energy of students, rather than trying to sell something
o Honor our military
o And, ultimately, crush the national debt!

Think of ways to personalize the 1% campaign- and let us know! We want to use all means to eradicate the debt! There are any number of ways for students to raise money: hold a bake sale, have a concert, wash a car, write letters to celebrities asking them to give 1%, ask businesses to give 1% … Make a website to show who has given 1%... hold a telethon, put out jars for loose coins…Challenge schools in other states (or nearby!) to see who can gather the most pledges…create community posters advertising our goals…make video challenges for YouTube/Facebook… the list is limitless.

This entire campaign download- including posters and tags are free!

Can we really make a difference? Absolutely!

Tie the 1% campaign into the curriculum! Here are a few cross-curricular lesson ideas:
Math- A) Budgets! B) Determine how much money would be needed to decrease the national debt by two trillion dollars C) Percentages D) charts and graphs
English- A) Letter-writing campaign to our senators asking them to propose legislation that abolishes the extended salary of government workers(for English class) B) Postcard challenges to other schools C) Future without a Deficit Essay

If you created something other schools can use, upload it as a free product on TeachersPayTeachers. I am happy to provide links to other free products that embrace this campaign.

There purposes for the “I’m Giving 1%” Campaign:
• To reduce the national debt.
• To honor those who serve in the military
• To create a sense of community

Post a Video Challenge. Say the following: I’m giving 1% to reduce the national debt in honor of _________________(military hero). I challenge 3 others: ____, ____, ___ to give 1% and post a video, too.

The 1% campaign is great for: Veteran’s Day… Memorial Day… Election Day…. President’s Day… Every Day!

God Bless the United States of America!
