These writing posters will brighten up your classroom while reminding students how to write each part of an essay.
In teaching junior-high English, I've found that we often assign students to write essays without realizing that maybe they have no idea what a thesis statement is, what goes into a body paragraph, or how to write a good conclusion. Turns out we actually have to teach them these things!
The biggest thing I've found I need to teach them is the fact that an introduction paragraph is completely different in structure from a body paragraph or a conclusion paragraph. Once they understand that you've got three types of paragraphs in an essay and that each type has it's own structure and organization, the writing process goes much more smoothly.
I use these "One Paragraph at a Time" posters as constant reminders all year long of what my students are learning about how to write an essay. If students say, "I don't know how to start my conclusion," I just point to the poster and that's usually enough to get them writing.
This package includes six posters:
* Introduction Paragraphs - Reminders about how to write a thesis statement, and suggestions for how to start the essay out
* Body Paragraphs - How to construct a good topic sentence, and sentence-starters for the supporting details
* Conclusion Paragraphs - Reminder of how to summarize the main points of the essay, and suggestions for how to wrap the essay up in an interesting way
* Paragraph Structures - An overview of the three types of paragraphs in an essay: Introduction, Body, and Conclusion
* Transitions - Suggested transitions as starters for each type of paragraph as well as for details within the paragraphs
* Things You Should Never Say in an Essay - A list of juvenile mistakes students should avoid to make their essays sound more mature
I've also included a two-page teacher's guide with instructions for how to use these posters and how to teach the concepts in the first place.
The file will come as a PDF in two sizes: 11x17 for immediate posters and 8.5x11 for student handouts or to blow up as extra-large classroom posters.
