Description

This lesson integrates STEAM concepts and standards with reading, writing and cultural competency. It is suggested for use as a review project or with teacher support. It contains a 4 part adaptable lesson plan with materials for the following:

1. Class discussion prompts

2. Webquest with fill in notes page

3. Experiment and lab write-up with detailed rubric

4. Extension ideas

Materials needed:

Computers,

This packet printed + writing utensils

Cups of pure water, vinegar water and bleach water (mixed half and half)

A pack of chalk

Timer

A Scale or Ruler, optional calculator.

Standards assessed:

Science (Next Generation Science Standard)

Conduct an investigation collaboratively to produce data to serve as the basis for evidence, using fair tests in which variables are controlled and the number of trials considered. (5-PS1-4)

Make observations and measurements to produce data to serve as the basis for evidence for an explanation of a phenomenon. (5-PS1-3)

Construct an argument supported by evidence for how increases in human population and per-capita consumption of natural resources impact Earth's systems. (MS-ESS3-4)

Students explore local and global issues and use collaborative technologies to work with others to investigate solutions(7d).

Engineering (Next Generation Science Standard)

Measure and graph quantities such as weight to address scientific and engineering questions and problems. (5-PS1-2)

Generate and compare multiple solutions to a problem based on how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the design problem. (3-5-ETS1-2)

Mathematics

Graph numeric patterns on the Cartesian coordinate plane. (Missouri: 5.RA.A.1 c.)

Display numerical data in plots on a number line, including dot plots, histograms, and box plots. (CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.SP.B.4)
