What educators are saying

This was the perfect compliment to our mentor text! The questions were thoughtful and the made the kids really think. It opened up many interesting conversations.

Description

Number the Stars by Lois Lowry is a must have in any upper elementary classroom. The friendship between the Johansens and the Rosens is torn apart after the Nazis invade Denmark and the Rosens lives are put in danger. It poses the question "What would you do to save the life of someone you care about?"

This packet includes a total of 54 writing prompts - 3 per chapter.

There are 2 versions of this journal in this packet. The first version is in the correct order – chapters 1 to 17 and the afterword. These are ready for printing, cutting apart, and using on a daily basis as a checkout slip, assignment, homework, reading notebook entry, etc. It is 10 pages total.

The second version is designed for printing back to back, assembling into a book, and stapling along the edge (or in the middle if you have a long reach stapler). The pages appear to be in the wrong order. However, once copied back to back and assembled as shown in the directions, the results will be a booklet that has all writing prompts in the correct order to write in as the student reads. It is also 10 pages total.

There is an answer key for those questions that have answers that come from the book. The answer key is 9 pages (answers are typed onto a version of the journal).

Finally, a rubric has been included for those that wish to give either the chapter entries or the entire finished journal a grade.
