Description

WOW! This lesson is incredibly interesting and fun for students. I have included a welcome video to walk you through how to use this INCREDIBLY easy lesson.

The three lessons included are: (1) adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators (2) adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators and (3) adding and subtracting mixed numbers.

Each lesson includes a warm-up question, a Youtube link to a song that includes instruction, a I Do, We Do, You Do portion and a case to solve as a class, individual or small groups. Lastly, I have included Kahoot links for each lesson.

Particulars of this case: Counterfeit money has been popping up, and your detectives are needed. On the first day (which may take one or two days) students will add fractions with like denominators to find which state the money is being made in. On the second lesson (which may take 1-2 days) students will narrow down the suspects by adding fractions with unlike denominators and lastly, students will prove the suspect is guilty by adding mixed numbers.

This lesson could take an entire week or 3 days depending on the level of the students.

Explain equivalence of fractions in special cases, and compare fractions by reasoning about their size.
Compare two fractions with the same numerator or the same denominator by reasoning about their size. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators, e.g., by creating common denominators or numerators, or by comparing to a benchmark fraction such as 1/2. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
Understand addition and subtraction of fractions as joining and separating parts referring to the same whole.
Add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators, e.g., by replacing each mixed number with an equivalent fraction, and/or by using properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction.
