Description

Welcome to the November Mystery Pictures and Hidden Messages. Bring a little fun into your math lessons. This is a mystery picture set that when solved looks like three different November icons including an American flag, a pilgrim man and woman, and a turkey. Perfect for when you want to challenge your students.

Students find the mystery pictures by following the coordinate points given and coloring in the correct answer squares on the graph. A special bonus is that each puzzle has a hidden message. After discovering the hidden pictures, students write the letters in specified colored boxes to get a secret message. BONUS FUN! The activities includes the student grid, coordinate points with colors, and finished puzzles for teacher reference.

I have used this activity with students from 3rd grade to 8th grade. Many older students enjoy using it for independent fun work or center activities.

Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a coordinate system, with the intersection of the lines (the origin) arranged to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given point in the plane located by using an ordered pair of numbers, called its coordinates. Understand that the first number indicates how far to travel from the origin in the direction of one axis, and the second number indicates how far to travel in the direction of the second axis, with the convention that the names of the two axes and the coordinates correspond (e.g., 𝘹-axis and 𝘹-coordinate, 𝘺-axis and 𝘺-coordinate).
Represent real world and mathematical problems by graphing points in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane, and interpret coordinate values of points in the context of the situation.
