October means PUMPKINS! There are countless activities and units dedicated to pumpkins, but this is not your average unit! This unit was designed with global themes in mind! Throughout this resource, you will teach economics, history, science, geography, and sociology! We hope you enjoy this unit as much as we do!
The topics that we cover include:
Economics: What is a commodity? How do pumpkins become a commodity?
History: Who started the tradition of carving jack-o-lanterns?
S.T.E.M: Have you noticed out obsession with all things pumpkin spiced in the fall? Why is that? Some researchers say that our olfactory memories (things you remember when you smell a scent) trigger the desire to get our hands on all the pumpkin spiced things!
Geography: Did you know that every continent can grow pumpkins except ONE?! Sorry, Antarctica! No pumpkins for you!
Sociology: What is extreme gardening and why do people do it? How do people grow those HUGE pumpkins to compete in contests?
