Description

This Doodle and Do resource is designed to help students learn about 12 nonfiction text features. First, they’ll “DOODLE” as they complete engaging doodle notes about each nonfiction text feature. Then, they’ll practice identifying, creating, reading, and finding text features as they “DO” three fun learning activities.

These lessons can be completed during the course of several days or at different times throughout the school year.

SKILLS ADDRESSED

Students will:

  • Define 12 different text features (Table of Contents, Glossary, Special Print, Graph, Subheading, Labels, Caption, Title or Header, Illustration, Photograph, Sidebar, Map)
  • Find examples of text features in a nonfiction passage
  • Know and use various text features
  • Read nonfiction articles
  • Demonstrate their comprehension skills

ABOUT DOODLE NOTES

  • Students will color, doodle, and/or embellish the note pages as they learn about text features.
  • Two versions of doodle notes are provided. One version includes guided notes. The other version is completely filled in.
  • Doodle notes cause a connection between the right and left hemisphere of the brain. This leads to an increase in learning, focus, and learning retention.
  • The doodles on the note page help students to connect images with information and significantly increases their ability to remember what they have learned.

ABOUT THE “DO” ACTIVITIES

This resource includes 3 “Do” activities for students to practice and showcase their learning:

  • Reading & Mini-Book – Students will read a nonfiction passage, answer comprehension questions, and then put together a mini-book all about the nonfiction text features that they can find in the passage.

  • Create Your Own Text Features – Students will read a nonfiction passage that is missing text features. They’ll need to insert text features into the passage before creating comprehension questions for a classmate to answer.

  • Text Feature Hunt – This activity works with any nonfiction passage or textbook. Students will need to search for examples of all 12 text features and provide an explanation for each text feature’s purpose.
