Students LOVE this informational text reading passage about the Kraken and giant squids, especially in October around Halloween time! Options include print, Easel Activities, and Google Forms. Two versions of the passage are included. The short version is a half-page of text and 4 multiple-choice comprehension questions with 4 answer choices on one page. The long version is one page of informational text and one page of 9 multiple choice comprehension questions with 4 answer choices. The questions cover a variety of reading skills and are modeled after the types of questions on standardized reading tests.
Both passage versions are especially great for interventions, modeling strategies, and building confidence! I have 32 years of experience in preparing students for standardized reading testing and in studying these types of tests.
The readability level of the mini-passage is in the 3rd-grade range, while the long passage is in the 5th-grade range. One way I use them both is to work on the long passage together with my 3rd graders while modeling good reading strategies, then assign the shorter passage as independent work a few days later.
