Description

This unit is packed with lessons, centers, printables and lots of easy to make hands-on activities that focus on measurement. Simply add simple math manipulatives such as: counters, Unifix cubes, links, balance/scale, empty bottles, measuring cups/spoons, thermometer, etc.

This unit focuses on 5 different components of measurement in kindergarten:

  • length/height
  • mass
  • capacity
  • temperature
  • area

Here's what's included:

- 1 week (5 days) of lesson plans for Length/Height

- 1 week (5 days) of lesson plans for Capacity & Weight

- measurement posters (measurement, length/height, weight, capacity, temperature, area)

Length/Height

- grid paper for names

- "How Long is your Foot?" -> measure foot and record

- "I'm Learning to Measure" -> cards to practice identifying how to measure (start/end, counting)

- "Measuring at the Zoo" -> measure various zoo animals using the non-standard measuring tool included and record

- "Measure Around the Room" -> measure school materials (i.e. glue stick, scissors) using a variety of non-standard measurement tools

- "Find It! Length" -> find objects that are longer than/shorter than other materials

- "How Tall Are You?" -> measure and compare heights of students

- "Find It! Height" -> find objects that are taller than/shorter than other materials

Capacity

- "Exploring Capacity" -> variety of questions posed for students to think about and explain, worksheet inviting students to compare capacity of items

- "More or Less" -> comparing items that hold more or less

Mass

- "Comparing Weight" -> sorting cards by which items weigh more or less

- "How Heavy is it?" -> weighing objects and recording data collected

- "Find Something Lighter/Heavier" -> use cards to direct students to find objects that are lighter/heavier

- "What Weighs More/Less?" -> compare weight of various objects

Temperature

- "What's the Temperature?" -> an original poem written by me to explain thermometer

- "Thermometer Experiment" -> hands-on experiment using thermometer

- "Comparing Temperature" -> use cards to sort out objects that are hot/cold

- "Ice Cube Experiment" -> record observations

Area

- "Introduction to Area" -> working with grids

- "Think About It" -> exploring more or less space

- "Cover the Area" -> use math manipulatives to cover different spaces

- "Pentomino Fun" -> use pentominoes to explore covering a space and documenting our work

- "Build an Animal" -> use square tiles to build an animal and record your findings

- "Paint Chip Creations" -> use paint chips to create a picture, record your findings
