Description

Hands-on, Differentiated, Independent review of non-fiction text features!

About

  • Your students will enjoy reviewing text features and their functions with this exciting and hands-on three-part activity
  • PDF includes book hunt student sheet with 10 features, 10 colorful text feature book marks (heading, caption, photo or drawing, key word, table of contents, glossary, diagram, index, graph, chart + 2 blank bookmarks for additional features) and a student reflection sheet

Differentiated:

  • Bookmarks are labeled and color coded
  • 1 set includes a sentence starter on the book mark itself to scaffold sentence writing for students, 1 set is blank for more independent students (choose a set before printing!)
  • Basic text features on Page 1 (if you choose to review only 5 features) and more challenging text features on Page 2 (if you choose to review all 10 features)

How to use:

  • To be used after introducing text features

Part 1:

  • Offer students a selection of non-fiction books of interest to them
  • Students choose a book and record examples of text features on the book hunt sheet provided (they record the book title and page number where they found each feature)

Part 2:

  • Students use the bookmarks to mark text features on book pages and finish the sentence explaining the function of the text feature (the same books as Part 1 or ask them to choose new books)
  • "Caption. A caption tells you ..." Students finish the sentence to show their understanding of each text feature's function (ie. "A caption tells you ... information about the picture)

Part 3

  • Students can complete a text feature reflection page (included)

Activity Extensions

  • Students trade book hunt sheets and try to find these same examples
  • Place a variety of non-fiction books in front of the students. Put the 10 text feature bookmarks in a cup. Draw one and have students race to show you an example of that feature
  • Students can do a "book walk" for a friend or record it with a camera. They can flip through a book and read aloud their function sentences
