Description

Students analyze style and punctuation throughout chapter five in order write a chapter six prediction in the style of Wiesel.

To understand Elie Wiesel's style, students look at his use of questions, ellipses, dialogue, and parallel structure and determine the effects each has on the reader and the content of the story.

Students should only read until the section in chapter five where Elie and his father are trying to decide on whether or not they should stay in the hospital or evacuate with the rest of the camp. Students will then use their knowledge about Elie's style in order to mimic it when writing their own endings to the chapter. This writing portion really helps students to understand the how much survival sometimes depending only on chance.
