Newton's Laws of Motion Interactive Video and Extension Activities
THIS RESOURCE INCLUDES:
- A PDF version of all documents
- A Google Doc version- Ideal for posting directly to Google Classroom
This interactive video and extension activities challenge students to explore Newton's Laws of Motion. Students begin their exploration by watching an interactive video to get a basic understanding of the three laws of motion and their application and then deepen their understanding through several extension activities. This is a complete and thorough 2 day lesson/unit with absolutely NO PREP WORK for the teacher!
Lesson Overview. Students will:
- Understand the basic idea of force interactions
- Differentiate between Newton's three laws of motion
- Comprehend the role of force, mass, and acceleration in an interaction
- Explain the process of determining the movement of an object interacting with an unbalanced force
- Develop a creative writing to illustrate their understanding
- Engage in discussion with classmates using higher order thinking
This resource includes:
- An interactive, highly engaging student video for each topic
- Note taking worksheet to accompany each video
- Step-by-step directions and suggested timeline for pacing
- Tips to help students write higher order thinking questions for classmates
- Extension activities to deepen student comprehension
- Online practice opportunities to review concepts
- Creative writing prompt to allow student illustration/application of understanding
This lesson includes opportunities for both individual and collaborative learning. All learning activities can be adapted for individual learning or teamwork depending on teacher preference.
Day 3
Newton's Laws Virtual Lab:
This NO PREP 20 Question Google Forms Virtual Lab allows students to perform various simulations involving Newton's Laws of Motion. This SELF-GRADING form will give students immediate feedback and allow the teacher to view results in real time.
This virtual lab could be used as:
- An introduction to the laws of motion
- A lab simulation to enhance understanding
- An assessment tool to evaluate student comprehension (formative or summative)
This virtual lab allows students to explore Newton's Laws of Motion. Through various simulations, students will:
- Learn the basic principles of each of Newton's laws of motion
- Explain what happens when equal forces act upon an object
- Comprehend the role of friction in determining the movement of an object
- Calculate the acceleration rates of various objects
- Describe the impact of changing the mass and force of objects during interaction
- Understand the role of force and distance in a system
Day 4
Newton's Laws Webquest:
GOOGLE SLIDES WEBQUEST! NO TEACHER PREP! ANSWER KEY INCLUDED.
From the webquest, students will:
- Learn about the three laws of motion as stated by Isaac Newton
- Describe the difference between the three laws
- Apply learning principles in two different simulation environments
- Explain how mass can effect the amount of force needed to move an object
- Design a tug-of-war competition that illustrates Newton's first law
