What educators are saying

This unit was awesome! My kids absolutely loved everything about it. It it very easy to use. I definitely recommend!
It was my first time teaching a Newspaper Unit and by adding my own twist I was able to easily drag out this material for over a month. I highly recommend this because it breaks it down wonderfully for you.

Description

Teach informative writing in an exciting, collaborative way with this project-based learning unit to read, write, and create a class newspaper.

In this EDITABLE unit, students receive direct instruction lessons before proceeding to write their own informative articles and take a unit test. Your unit could stop here, or you can proceed to Phase 3, in which students apply for a job within the class newspaper company and work in small-group departments to create a class newspaper out of all the written articles.

This 52-page/slide download includes:

  • Teacher's Guide
  • Unit Preview page for students
  • PowerPoint lesson about the basics of journalism, the parts of a newspaper, and informative writing of articles, WITH guided notes and answer key
  • 3 video lessons of the above PPT, in case you want to flip your classroom (or watch it before you teach it)
  • Job application for the newspaper staff
  • Article writing directions, topic brainstorm, and outline
  • Article rubric
  • Newspaper template for students (as a starting point)
  • Participation rubric for Phase 3 (PBL)
  • Unit test, assessing vocabulary and nonfiction reading

NOTE:

  • This unit does not assume prior student knowledge and is an introductory unit.
  • This unit was originally made for my mixed-ability class of seventh graders, and since it is EDITABLE, it can be modified to become easier or more challenging for your class.
