How to use this News Article Summary Lesson:

This News Article Summary Lesson teaches students essential news literacy skills. Students are introduced to the Five Questions Model (W5-H), a reading comprehension strategy and writing framework that is applicable to any informational text.  This model provides students with a framework to interpret the structure of news articles.

You can begin this lesson with the Summarizing a News Report Slideshow Lesson.  This lesson is formatted for both Microsoft PowerPoint® and Google Slides®.  Students will be introduced to the Five Questions Model (W5-H) and differentiate between different features of news articles, including headlines, leads, location of publication, and supporting paragraphs.  It also clarifies what a summary should and should not include, encouraging students to consider language, audience, and tone. Finally, students will learn the Five Steps to Summarizing a News Report.

As you work through the lesson with your students, they can fill out the corresponding Summarizing a News Report Guided Note.  This guided note template prompts students to make note of important information from the slideshow lesson.  They will also have space to answer the inquiry-based questions within the slideshow; you can have students fill out their answers before consolidating them as a class with the information provided in the lesson.

Students will be prompted to practice the skills covered in the slideshow lesson using the Sample News Article titled “Neurodivergent interns thriving at Calgary Aerospace company.”  This article explores hypothetical internship opportunities for high school students and demonstrates how these partnerships gain workplace experience and potentially evolve into employment opportunities.

After reading the article, students can complete the News Article Graphic Organizer.  The graphic organizer is also formatted within the slideshow lesson in order to prompt students to discuss their answers.

Students can then use their news article graphic organizer to write a summary of the news report.  A 4-Level Rubric for Summarizing News Reports has also been provided for assessment purposes.  This rubric is aligned with the Ontario Curriculum for the OLC4O / OSSLC Course.  This rubric is also provided in editable and ready-to-print formats to meet the unique needs of your classroom.
