What educators are saying
Description
Years ago, I had an incredible opportunity to teach in Australia. After a few months of relief/supply/substitute teaching, I stumbled across a remarkable English language school network in the western part of Melbourne (Western English Language Schools). This government school taught English and Math to new arrivals to the country (immigrants and refugees) for 3-12 months (in small class sizes) before transferring them to state/public schools. I view it like a program that eases these children into a new school system and lays a foundation of basic skills. It’s amazing.
This network of schools exposed me to a wide variety of valuable ideas/experiences to support new arrivals who are acquiring English: picture dictionaries, weekend writing, field trips, and speaking and listening activities. Due to a low budget, I did find myself creating many resources and this is what I want to share with you.
