Description

This fully editable packet is ready to use to celebrate New Year's with your middle school students through vocabulary and resolution / goal-setting. This lesson plan guides students through a Do Now, Notes about resolutions, goals and hopes, and then has students define 5 new vocabulary words before selecting their one "Word of the Year." Students will then research more about their "Word of the Year," fill in boxes about antonyms, synonyms, example sentences, and create a relevant image or symbol.

Then, students will complete a creative assignment that asks them to write a letter to their future self explaining how their "Word of the Year" connects to their resolutions, goals or commitments.

Finally, have students create a one-page poster that shares the definition, connection to their hopes, goals or resolutions, and an illustration. Have students share out with the class, and then display around the room to celebrate these new vocabulary words.

Use these resources for New Year's in your middle school ELA classroom to have a thoughtful and engaging vocabulary activity for the New Year!
