What educators are saying

This was such a nice find, as supplement to my Washington State history unit. The length of each portion, and the balance of text to image, was just right for 6th 7th. Thank you.
This was a great resource to use with our unit! Our textbook had a very short chapter, so this was a great resource to have with it. My students loved the gallery walk and looking at the different pictures.

Description

Each Native American Region is unique and should be taught separately. The Pacific Northwest Region is fascinating and has a rich cultural heritage.

My Native American regional units are focused on pre-contact cultures but the descendants of many of the tribes we study continue to practice their cultural traditions today.

Contents of this mini-unit:

Teacher Notes

Pacific Northwest Region Map

Passage 1: Overview of the Pacific Northwest Region and Religious Beliefs/Oral History - Includes a cloze passage to help students process the information.

Passage 2: Social and Family Structure - Includes a cloze passage to help students process the information.

Passage 3: Potlatch Celebrations and Totem Poles - Includes a cloze passage to help students process the information.

Passage 4: Clothing and Art - Includes a cloze passage to help students process the information.

Gallery Walk: This is a low-prep primary source activity. Simply print one copy of each of the six primary source pages and make a copy of the recording sheet for each group. These photos were taken many years after contact but we can still get a good idea of Pacific Northwest life by examining them.

Project Choice Board: I require my students to complete two of the projects listed on the choice board. Completing these projects helps my students to dive deeper into the information presented to them while using their critical thinking skills. I don’t use rubrics with these projects because there are eight different project choices. That would be a grading nightmare. Instead, I grade the projects holistically, looking for accuracy, effort, and creativity.

Quiz: I use the quiz as a final assessment for the mini-unit. The quiz is fill-in-the-blank with an answer bank.
