Description

Each Native American Region is unique and should be taught separately. The Arctic (Inuit) People are fascinating and have a rich cultural heritage.

My Native American regional units are focused on pre-contact cultures but the descendants of many of the tribes we study continue to practice their cultural traditions today.

Contents of this mini-unit:

Teacher Notes

Arctic Region Map

Passage 1: Overview of the Arctic Region and Inuit Hunting Traditions - Includes a cloze passage to help students process the information.

Passage 2: Family Relationships, Housing and Transportation, Clothing - Includes a cloze passage to help students process the information.

Passage 3: Nutrition and Traditions - Includes a cloze passage to help students process the information.

Gallery Walk: This is a low-prep primary source activity. Simply print one copy of each of the six primary source pages and make a copy of the recording sheet for each group. These photos were taken many years after contact but we can still get a good idea of Inuit life by examining them.

Project Choice Board: I require my students to complete two of the projects listed on the choice board. Completing these projects helps my students to dive deeper into the information presented to them while using their critical thinking skills. I don’t use rubrics with these projects because there are eight different project choices. That would be a grading nightmare. Instead, I grade the projects holistically, looking for accuracy, effort, and creativity.

Quiz: I use the quiz as a final assessment for the mini-unit. The quiz is fill-in-the-blank with an answer bank.
