What educators are saying

Such a great resource to help students with naming! I usually do anchor charts and reference sheets, but this spinner is more concise and on a smaller scale.
This was a fun way to practice naming chemical compoinds. It is a great break from typical paper exercises.

Description

This Naming Compounds Spinner is a sure-fire way to help your students with chemical nomenclature!

This is part of my Naming Compounds Bundle AND my cost-saving, amazing Chemistry Bundle!

The top layer asks the students 3 questions to help them identify which type of compound they are trying to name:

• Binary Ionic Compound,

• Binary Ionic Compound – Metal with Multiple Ionic Charges,

• Compounds with Polyatomic Ions and

• Molecular Compounds.

I’ve used this spinner for years with my Grade 10 Science classes in the Chemistry unit. The students love the spinner because it is fun, easy to use and colorful - meaning it’s easy for students to find in their binders!

It is very simple to put together, and shouldn’t take your students more than 5 minutes to assemble. I print out the 2 pages onto colorful paper and let the students pick which colors they’d like. Yellow for the top layer is fun because it makes the spinner look like Pac Man! Just another element of novelty to add to Science class! The students will cut out each circle and the clearly labeled area from the top layer. After that all they need to do is use a split pin or brass fastener to connect the pieces and they are ready to name compounds!

I’ve included 3 different top layers that you can choose from depending on how much information you want to give to your students:

1 – Includes the 3 questions that help the students identify which type of compound they are trying to name by looking at the chemical formula, the prefixes for molecular compounds (from mono- to deca-) and Roman Numerals (from I to X).

2- Includes the 3 questions, but does not include the prefixes or Roman numerals.

3 – Does not include the 3 questions, prefixes or Roman numerals. This one is useful if you are expecting them to determine the type of compound on their own.

What's in the zipped file?

• the PDF Spinner file if you love it the way it is

• the editable PowerPoint file if you need to make a tweak for your students

What you’ll need:

• 2 pieces of (colorful) paper per student

• 1 split pin or brass fastener per student (can be found at an office supply store for very cheap!)
