Grades 6 -8 - New York State Science Learning Standards "I Can Statements"

Updated 2023

Connected to the New York State Next Generation ELA and Math Learning Standards.

These Standards were adopted by NYS in 2016 and rolled out beginning in 2017, with implementation Pre-K through Grade 8 in 2019. As of 2023 these Standards have been updated.

Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems (purple) – 21 I Can Statements

Growth, Development, and Reproduction of Organisms (red) – 34 I Can Statements

Natural Selection and Adaptations (yellow) – 26 I Can Statements

Space Systems (magenta) – 22 I Can Statements

History of Earth (dark green) – 17 I Can Statements

Earth’s Systems (peach) – 19 I Can Statements

Weather and Climate (violet) – 20 I Can Statements

Human Impacts (light blue) – 21 I Can Statements

Engineering Design (mint green) – 22 I Can Statements

I have used a different color boarder for each unit.

Each framework section was broken down into manageable goals and written in student-friendly I Can Statements.

(Each I Can Statement is displayed on a colorful mini-poster (2 mini-posters per page).

Print on card stock or laminate for durability.

Display the mini-posters in your classroom to help students clearly understand the standards they are expected to master.
