NOTES 1: Grade 1 Music Workbook

A comprehensive Grade 1 music workbook with bite-sized beginner theory worksheets and ear-training exercises. I designed this workbook to use 1 page per class time (which usual take around 5-10 minutes for the students to complete). Of course we want the focus of our classes to be the actual making of music, but I have found that just a spoonful of independent desk work can be a good way to wind down at the end of class and solidify the concepts we've learned through songs and movement activities.

I use this book with my Grade 1 students, but it may be appropriate for older students as well depending on their level of musical literacy. Uses tempo terminology from the Western Classical tradition (largo and allegro) so you may choose to skip those if that's not the direction you want to go.

Concepts covered:

- beat and rhythm

- strong beats and weak beats

- quarter notes, quarter rests

- eighth notes

- quadruple metre, triple metre, duple metre

- tempo: largo, allegro
