Description

This resource takesa look at the interesting world of CRYPTOZOOLOGY, CRYPTIDS, and THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD.

TASK 1: Informational Text / Reading Comprehension

- The Scientific Method

- Three Main Features of the Scientific Method: systemic empiricism, empirical questioning and public knowledge.

- Pseudoscience

- Cryptid: the platypus

TASK 2: Comprehension Check, VOCABULARY, and Greek and Latin Prefixes, Roots and Suffixes

There are 14 questions based on the text the student read. Here, they also take a look at the meaning of some Greek prefixes and suffixes and how these can help us understand / make sense of words.

TASK 3: I once was a cryptid

In this task, student research an animal that was once regarded as a cryptid, but has now been observed, recorded and classified as a species.

TASK 4: Cryptid Research:

Students can then research and report on any of the following cryptids. There is a page on each of these cryptids, with information, a space to draw the cryptid, and a FACT FILE to complete.

- Grootslang- South Africa

- Storsjöodjuret - Sweden

- Fiskerton Phantom – United Kingdom

- Pal Rai Yuk – Alaska, USA

- Batsquatsch – Washington, USA

- The Yowie - Australia

How to use:
Independent Research Project / Webquest

Introduction to the Scientific Method: Students could complete the task independently and submit as part of a research project on the topic.
Homework

Set the task as part of normal homework on the topic.
Subplan

Use the resource as a subplan.

- Students will need access to the internet.
- No specific websites / sources are inlcuded. Students have to find their own. They should also indicate their sources. WIKIPEDIA is not a source :)
- Take a loot at the PREVIEW to get an idea of what you are buying.
- ZIP File with TWO files: the research project, the suggested answers with the ToU.
