Description

Welcome to this resource! I hope you find it as useful as I do! :-)

One of my students' favorite center rotations is our mathematics sentence journal center ~ this is a place where students manufacture their own arithmetic mathematics sentences, recording the answers in their journals as they work on playing various independent math games. Because students create their own sentences and answer them using manipulatives like dice, dominoes, cards, or spinners, they love their math journals! When I started incorporating these into my center rotations while teaching Kindergarten, I saw a huge increase in student output and student academic confidence. I have continued to use these with my first graders, who love them!

Some games that work very well in conjunction with these journals are Race to 100, Race to $1.00, Subtracting to 0 (which is Race to 100 in reverse), addition/multiplication war, area, volume, and array activities, and many others.

Provided in this resource are:

4 different covers for a Mathematics Sentence Journal

12 blank templates, where students can fill in the operation they are using, including templates for balancing equations, and triple addends

12 addition templates, building from 2 addends to challenging your students to complete 5 addend addition sentences

3 subtraction templates

6 multiplication templates, including triple multiplication

3 division templates

Each template has three options to choose:

1 with numbers to self-correct number reversals

1 with numbers to self-correct number reversals and a cute divider

1 without numbers for older students, or more advanced early elementary students

To assemble your Mathematics Sentence Journal:
1. Choose a cover, then print out one cover for each student in your class

2. Choose a template for the inside of your book, then print the one template page double-sided. I suggest printing enough pages so that each journal holds a minimum of 4 double-sided sheet of paper ~ feel free to use more, though!

3. Introduce the center, and the game students will be playing

4. Enjoy a quiet center that allows you to focus solely on the center you are running!

5. Feel free to print up different skills for different students, a wonderful way to differentiate based on your students' needs!

6. Also, if parents are looking for more work at home, sending a journal home can be a great way to give parents a manageable framework to support their children with little prep time for you!

******I do suggest checking these journals on occasion, and setting a completion date for them, so students are able to gauge whether their work speed is matching your expectation ~ this helps to increase task-commitment in my kiddos******

When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object.
Understand that the last number name said tells the number of objects counted. The number of objects is the same regardless of their arrangement or the order in which they were counted.
Understand that each successive number name refers to a quantity that is one larger.
