What educators are saying

Students really enjoy using this and it solidifies this abstract concept. Great low-prep activity. Highly recommend.
Super Resource. Students were highly interested and it demonstrated exactly what sea-floor spreading does! Thank you!

Description

In this activity, students will create a model that simulates the creative and destructive forces that result in seafloor spreading. There are movable tabs that are pulled on the sides that show how these horizontal layers of basalt are created and spread out in opposite directions. Relative ages of rock can be established. Given a scale, absolute ages can also be deduced.

Materials needed are just copy paper, a small bit of tape, scissors, and coloring utensils.

This activity is more chill than my other labs, and my students enjoyed the coloring aspect as a bit of a break. My classroom was quiet, I turned the lights off, and it was a nice break while creating something that really puts an idea into 3-D space.
