Description

This is written as a 4 week long research project appropriate for a Chemistry or Physics class studying nuclear power, but the timeframe can be shortened to fit your needs.

It has been broken up into tasks that need to be submitted weekly to help the teacher keep track of student progress and attendance throughout the project.

Students will research many aspects of nuclear energy including radioactivity, isotopes, history of some of the major players, nuclear power plants, nuclear incidents, and more.

The following is included:

-Student instruction overview sheet (2 pages)

-Student structured research pages (Google Doc so they can type directly) (7 pages)

-Teacher grading sheet (2 pages)

-An optional intro activity where students listen to a podcast about the Cold War and answer a few questions. It's a great "hook" assignment! I got great feedback from my students about it and decided to include it here. Scroll down to the last two pages of the document to find this activity. (1 page)

Develop models to illustrate the changes in the composition of the nucleus of the atom and the energy released during the processes of fission, fusion, and radioactive decay. Emphasis is on simple qualitative models, such as pictures or diagrams, and on the scale of energy released in nuclear processes relative to other kinds of transformations. Assessment does not include quantitative calculation of energy released. Assessment is limited to alpha, beta, and gamma radioactive decays.
