Each of the 3 lessons includes engaging, ready to print resources, including:

In lesson 1, students create scale models of the Earth, Moon, and Sun to compare their sizes and distances from each other. Students will apply their knowledge of scale to the distance and brightness of stars in lesson 3. There is a video tutorial to help set up this lesson.

In lesson 2, students will learn how scientists participate in argumentation and write an initial claim about the size of the Sun. The complete a simple Claim-Evidence-Reasoning argument in preparation for a more complex C-E-R argument in lesson 3.

Lesson 3 will take between three and five days. In this series of activities, students will obtain evidence to answer the question: “Why does the Sun look bigger and brighter than other stars?”. After gathering evidence, students will plan and write more complex Claim-Evidence-Reasoning argument to complete this performance expectation.

Support an argument that differences in the apparent brightness of the sun compared to other stars is due to their relative distances from Earth. Assessment is limited to relative distances, not sizes, of stars. Assessment does not include other factors that affect apparent brightness (such as stellar masses, age, stage).
