Description

Using this unit students have the opportunity to plan out their very own road trip! They get to choose 7 places they'd like to travel, where to eat, what to eat, where to stay, what to see along the way, and even what car to travel in!

Before beginning the full project, students must complete six skills that prove they are ready for the FULL project. These skills include:
-Longitude/Latitude reading
-Time Zone maps
-Measuring map scale
-Gas calculations
-Compass rose readings
-How to read a road map

Once students master the six skills they are ready to jump in!

In the road trip students must:
-Plan 7 sites to see
-Research and prepare where they'd like to visit along the way
-Calculate mileage and gas cost based on rental car info provided
(They get to choose from an extensive list of cars!)
-Stick to a budget and prepare cost sheet
-Choose meals and lodging
-Use a road map to determine directions from destination to destination
-Write a postcard halfway through journey to tell friends/family about the trip

This unit is a blast! Students get full ownership of their own summer vacation. I've even had students plan out their real travels and share their new information with their family! So much fun.

I hope you can use this wonderful unit with your students sometime this year! It's a fantastic way to sneak in math, geography, research skills, and social studies.

Happy travels!
