"My Sister's Keeper" by Jody Picoult study guide, test & answer key

"My Sister's Keeper" is an interesting and compelling read for many high school students as the author draws readers into the story from page one, and they can't put the book down. This is a very relevant story because advanced stem cell research and its endless possibilities are often in the news. In this story a baby(Anna) is conceived to be a bone marrow donor for her older sister (Kate). Anna never questions giving and giving and giving to her sick sister until she becomes a teenager and begins to question her own existence. Anna's questioning nearly tears the family apart and spells out a probable death sentence for her sister. This book explores the strong bond between sisters as well as the compulsion to be an individual. This is also a study about the dynamics of a marriage, the commitment to a sick child and where the male child fits into the picture. The impact of the probable death of a sibling on the dynamics of a family where each is fighting for their own existence and recognition is heart breaking. Young people reading this book will be able to identify with many of the struggles of the characters in this book, as it is not unusual for a teen to feel completely lost and unheard in his/her family structure.
