Description

Music in Our Schools Activity - Oh no! The band can't play in the parade because the truck carrying their musical instruments is stuck in traffic. Have your students help the band by creating a variety of musical instruments. They must use the available supplies to engineer something that will make sound while sticking to a budget. This project can be modified to use for very young students to more advanced students. It is perfect to use with your Science unit on Sound or it can be used during "Music in Our Schools" Month. Students will love to stretch their creative thinking brains to create a musical instrument!

Suggested Plan of Implementation:

Prior Week: Send home the parent letter requesting supplies. Gather needed materials.
Day One – Introduce and discuss the “Let’s Talk About It " slide. Introduce the STEM Challenge.
Day Two – Introduce and discuss the budget options. Use the planning page to illustrate or write out the building idea.
Day Three – “Purchase” supplies for the build. Work on budget. Begin the building process.
Day Four – Work on and complete the structure.
Day Five – Test the structure. Complete the Self-Evaluation Page

This is certainly not the only way to use these materials. They are designed to be flexible and be used to best suit each classroom and teacher based on the ability of the learner, time constraints and teacher preference.
