What educators are saying

A great resource for Hispanic Heritage themed lessons. My students enjoyed learning about Mariachi music and they had fun with the cup routine.
This was a perfect way to keep my 5th grade Music history class engaged. The bright colorful slides were awesome and super informative!

Description

Introduce your students to the Mariachi music that helps us celebrate Cinco de Mayo with this presentation and cup routine! The presentation is broken down as follows:

  • Slides 1-2: What is Cinco de Mayo?
  • Slide 3: Traditions in the United States
  • Slides 4-7: Mariachi music/instruments/listening suggestions
  • Slide 8: Famous Mariachi Songs
  • Slides 9-10: La Raspa introduction
  • Slides 11-17: La Raspa cup routine videos (Easy version)
  • Slides 18-24: La Raspa cup routine videos (Difficult version)
  • Slides 25-27: Jarabe Tapatio (Mexican Hat Dance)

Many people mistakenly think that the music for La Raspa is the same as the Mexican Hat Dance (Jarabe Tapatio). They are two completely different folk songs! La Raspa is much simpler than Jarabe Tapatio, making it a good folk song to use with elementary students. There are many dances to La Raspa on Youtube that you could add to this lesson-- just be aware that you might have to search for "Mexican Hat Dance" to get the same music!

Although I give listening suggestions and terminology for you to use to search Youtube, I do not link to videos that are not my own in these files due to copyright restrictions. All of the cup routine videos ARE inserted/embedded into the presentation, and direct links are given in the PDF as well. If your school blocks Youtube, this probably will not work for you.

Formats included:

  • Powerpoint presentation
  • Google Slides link (does not require access to your Google drive)
  • Google Slides force copy link (so you can have your own copy)

You will receive a Zip file that includes the Powerpoint version, as well as a PDF with links to the Google Slides.

Since there is an easy version and a difficult version of the cup routine, this resource will work for multiple grade levels! Each section of the song has its own dedicated video with the music played at 3/4 tempo, and then there is a video with the full cup routine at normal tempo for both the easy and difficult versions.

I hope this is a fun way for your to introduce Mariachi music and celebrate Cinco de Mayo in your music room!
