This is a music guided listening unit over "The Planets" by Gustav Holst. It is best suited for grades 5 and up, but can easily be modified and enjoyed by the younger grades as well.
The main attraction of this package is the presentation slides with SafeShareTV (YouTube) examples to several performances of the seven movements. For each movement/planet, you will find links pertaining to the following videos:
- Listening Guide Video (Philharmonia Orchestra)
- Full Live Orchestral Performance
- Static Planet View with music in the background
There are also World History and Science connections. Topics include:
- World War I
- The Panama Canal
- Passenger Pigeons
- Theory of Relativity
- US President Woodrow Wilson reference
- Short statistical information regarding each planet. Planet info pages have links to additional statistics provided by the official NASA page.
GUIDED LISTENING ACTIVITIES:
LISTENING JOURNAL (VERSION 1) This is like a SQUILT Journal for the student to complete while listening to the piece. The student is asked to summarize the movement, and provide information about dynamics, tempo, instruments, and emotions present in the movement.
LISTENING JOURNAL (VERSION 2) This assessment is just like the one above. However, in the first version, the tempo section has BPMs listed next to the tempo. In this version, the description is next to the tempo instead of the BPM.
FOLLOW ALONG ASSESSMENTS:
PHILHARMONIA VIDEO FOLLOW ALONG QUESTIONS: This activity is made up of short, 4-5 question assessments to go along with each video created by the Philharmonia Orchestra. Each video is short and gives a detailed description of the elements present in each movement. There is also a rating system given, asking students to rate the movement by coloring the planets. (Key Included)
PRESENTATION FOLLOW ALONG QUESTIONS: This is a guided worksheet for students to work on while listening and participating in lecture from the Keynote or PowerPoint presentation (Key Included)
OTHER ASSESSMENTS:
EXIT SLIPS There are 14 different pre-made selections of questions.
EXIT SLIPS (BLANK) There are six blank exit slip options (three with writing lines, three without lines)
CROSSWORD PUZZLE (Key Included)
WORD SEARCH (Key Included)
As with all classes, only you know your students and how well they perform with certain activities. You are always encouraged to create your own assessments as well in addition to the resources I have created.
There are two types of presentations included:
- PowerPoint Presentation with editable slides, should you choose.
- PDF "Ready-to-go" file if you'd like to use the presentation as I've made it.
SAFESHARETV INFORMATION:
This presentation does not include actual video and/or audio files. Only links to SafeShareTV are included in the last few slides of the presentation.
SafeShareTV takes YouTube links and eliminates the distractions of related videos, autoplay, and best of all, NO ADS! This is why some sort of safe-viewer is recommended in the classroom. I have also made sure to edit the videos to crop out any unnecessary beginning time (like applause) so you get right to the music after clicking the link.
To see if your institution allows SafeShareTV, (from your institution's technology) click the link below to test the connection.

You can always make use of this activity without SafeShareTV or YouTube, just delete the slides with the examples and use your own listening materials.
