Description
Welcome!
My goal is to provide educators with thoughtful materials that they can either integrate into their current curricula or adopt entirely. The Introduction to Jazz unit contains over 80 pages of content and is a 6-10 week unit that explores jazz history of the first half of the twentieth century. All documents, with the exception of the PowerPoints, are in PDF format. Please note that teaching schedules vary. This unit has been designed based on a 6-day rotating schedule. Below are the items that you will find in this unit.
Unit Map
The unit map contains an overview of the unit (overarching goals, essential questions, knowledge and skills, repertoire/key musicians, and terms) in addition to individual lesson plans. Each lesson plan has been aligned to the National Core Arts Standards and contains detailed step-by-step teacher instructions. Space has also been provided for educators to enter their respective state standards.
Each lesson has been designed as a 50 minute contact period. The lessons in this unit are as follows:
- Day 1: Introduction and Ragtime
- Day 2: New Orleans Jazz
- Day 3: The Swing Era
- Day 4: Bebop
- Day 5: Review (Includes Kahoot Game Link)
- Day 6: Assessment
PowerPoints
Each lesson plan is accompanied by a corresponding PowerPoint presentation, containing the lesson learning activities, images, YouTube links, and select Spotify links.
Unit Packet
The student unit packet is designed to accompany the learning activities within the lesson plans and PowerPoints. The written activities within this packet may be used as formative assessments.
Assessment/Answer Key
A final written assessment and teacher answer key are provided.
Jazz Projects
Two jazz projects are included as an alternative to the written assessment. The use of either jazz project can extend the unit by 3-4 contact periods.
Adaptable and Customizable
Within the Unit Map, there are opportunities for educators to customize the content to their liking. Although there are designated/suggested recordings for certain activities, many components of the lesson plans are flexible and can be adapted to recordings/compositions of your choice. Two bonus activities have also been included to supplement the curricular content.
I hope these materials serve you well! If you are happy with your purchase, please share your comments and rating on TpT. Happy music making!
