Music For Social Justice-Music Analysis & Playlist Creation Unit Project Outline
- Zip
Description
This project outline guides your student's exploration, listening, analysis and response to the music that embodies social justice issues and movements of social change. While many projects provide suggested listening lists, this project gives students the opportunity to explore these songs firsthand and curate their own playlists based on a chosen topic!
Additionally, this project outline facilitates class discussion of how music can be used to influence awareness and change. Perfect for Music & Non-Music classes alike!
The zip folder includes both PDF and editable .docx file formats, perfect for in-person, virtual learning, Google Classroom, or other LMS platforms
The project is broken into multiple sections:
Part I-What is Social Justice?
-Students research social justice issues that are personally meaningful. This is complete with guiding questions and Thinksheet organizer outlines.
Part II-Compiling Musical Responses to Social Justice Issues.
-Students research musical examples that reflect their social justice issue. Using the guiding questions and playlist organizer, students are able to compile and describe their playlist. Further guiding questions help facilitate connections between playlist selections and music composition.
This project outline can be used as an introductory or stand-alone assignment, and follows the NAfME 2014 Music Standards for Listening, Responding, and Connecting.
