What educators are saying

Great resource to reinforce the different processes involved in aerobic and anaerobic processes! Thank you!
This was a great way to review the properties of slow and fast-twitch muscle fibers with students. To make it fun, we even had a textbook-holding competition at the end of class to practice using our slow-twitch muscle fibers!

Description

If you watch a track meet, it is clear that some types of athletes fatigue more quickly than others. This 2-day, fully prepped lab dives into the differences between fast-twitch and slow-twitch muscle fibers. Your students will love challenging themselves to speed and endurance challenges, but along the way they’ll learn the intricacies of aerobic versus anaerobic respiration.

By the end of this lab, your students will be able to explain why fast-twitch muscle fibers fatigue more quickly than slow-twitch muscle fibers. They will also have an understanding of why fast-twitch muscle fibers are whiter in color and use anaerobic respiration while slow-twitch muscle fibers are redder in color and use aerobic respiration.

Concepts covered:

  • Sports that use fast-twitch versus slow-twitch
  • Aerobic versus anaerobic respiration reactants, products, ATP-yield, and lactic acid production
  • Myoglobin and its impacts on muscle fibers
  • Fatigue resistance of fast-twitch versus slow-twitch muscle fibers

The resource is available in both print and digital forms.

Included within this resource, you will receive the following print resources:

  • 1-page teacher instructions
  • 6-page lab (PDF form)
  • 6-page lab KEY (PDF form)

Also included are digital versions (through Google Slides™) of the:

  • 6-page lab (PDF form with textboxes)
