Recognizing the different sounds of the -ed suffix is a tricky concept. This product provides a detailed lesson plan as well as a variety of posters, worksheets, and activities to help your students better grasp this skill.
All worksheets and activities are separated into long- and short-vowel words.
This resource includes the following:
1. Lesson Plan- want to know how to put it all together? This detailed lesson plan lays out from beginning to end how to introduce the concept of suffix -ed words and includes each resource within the packet for you to use.
2. Word Cards- There are 84 suffix -ed word cards included (including real and nonsense words) so the lessons can be more individualized to focus on specific words.
3. Words and Sentences Reading Pages- These 4 pages (one for each sound that -ed makes and one page with all three sounds together) include Real Words, Nonsense Words, and Sentences for reading practice. The sound that the suffix -ed makes (/ed/, /d/, or /t/) is pictured at the top of each page and is listed in the “Skill Focus” at the top left.
4. Sentences: These 4 pages (one for each sound that -ed makes and one page with all three sounds together) include 8 sentences each for additional reading practice.
5. Suffix -ed posters- there are three sets of posters (each poster is 8 ½ x 11 size and can be used for classroom display to introduce the skill). All posters come in color and black and white.

- Suffix -ed Rules Poster- this poster explains the rules for determining the sounds that suffix -ed makes and provides examples
- Three Sounds of the Suffix -ed Poster- this poster provides additional example words and sentences demonstrating the three sounds that suffix -ed makes.
6. Worksheets- each set includes a page of long-vowel words and a page of short-vowel words.
- Dot It- students read through each word and “dot” the sound that the -ed suffix makes.
- Color It- students read through each word and color the crayon to correspond with the sound that the -ed suffix makes.
- Suffix -ed Review- this worksheet helps the teacher see if the students understand the suffix -ed rules. Students underline the suffix -ed in each word, write the sound that the suffix makes in the box, and circle the last sound in the base word that help them know which sound the suffix -ed would make in that word.
7. Activities- each set includes a page of long-vowel words and a page of short-vowel words.
- Sorting Suffixes- students sort pre-cut words into the correct /ed/, /d/, /t/ column.
- Puzzles- students connect puzzles with words containing the same -ed ending sounds.
8. Answer Keys- all worksheets and activities in this product have an answer key that is put together on one page for quick and easy reference when grading student work.
