What educators are saying

My students really enjoyed this activity. It was a great way to get them to complete numerous practice problems without feeling like they were doing a worksheet. I had them work together with partners and created a "race" out of trying to solve the mystery the fastest. They loved it.
I edited this and they thought it was so funny!!! We mixed it up a little so each class period had a different ending!! I just wish some negatives would have been included.

Description

How to make multiplying and dividing fractions FUN? Use this activity! In this activity, students multiply and divide fractions to solve a mystery! Get clues by multiplying and dividing fractions and solve the case!

In this activity, the suspects, weapons and locations are all editable, so you can use your own entries for each of these categories. The title of the activity is also customizable so you can create your own mystery!

This kit offers three ways to use this activity.

Use as a Scavenger Hunt: The download includes 23 full-color cards for you to print and hang around your room for a class activity. As students solve their problems, they look around the room for their answer to see what clue they should eliminate.

Use as an Individual Activity: The download also includes a version that has all of the necessary clue information so students can complete this activity outside of the classroom. This is perfect for students who were absent during the class activity.

Use as a Digital Activity: The download also includes a drag-and-drop digital activity in Google Slides.

In all versions, the activity contains 20 questions.

This product allows the teacher the option of either leaving the fractions as improper fractions or mixed numbers.

Each answer is associated with either a suspect, a weapon or a location. When a student gets the answer, that option is eliminated from the mystery. When they are finished, students will only have one suspect, one weapon and location left, and they will have solved the mystery!

UPDATE: This item is now editable using Adobe Acrobat Reader! Now you can customize the title, suspects, weapons and locations! Please note that with this update, the file may not function correctly in all PDF Readers. Please use Acrobat Reader to ensure best functionality.

Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction or whole number by a fraction.
Apply and extend previous understandings of division to divide unit fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions.
Interpret and compute quotients of fractions, and solve word problems involving division of fractions by fractions, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem. For example, create a story context for (2/3) ÷ (3/4) and use a visual fraction model to show the quotient; use the relationship between multiplication and division to explain that (2/3) ÷ (3/4) = 8/9 because 3/4 of 8/9 is 2/3. (In general, (𝘢/𝘣) ÷ (𝘤/𝘥) = 𝘢𝘥/𝘣𝘤.) How much chocolate will each person get if 3 people share 1/2 lb of chocolate equally? How many 3/4-cup servings are in 2/3 of a cup of yogurt? How wide is a rectangular strip of land with length 3/4 mi and area 1/2 square mi?
Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division and of fractions to multiply and divide rational numbers.
