What educators are saying

Wonderful resource to help students visualize how to multiply fractions with an area model. Love the highlighted colors too becasue it helped the students see how the colors overlap.
Finding good visual models for multiplying fractions is always a challenge. This one was great though! I'll definitely be repeating it!

    Description

There are 4 resources for teaching area model fraction multiplication in this mini-bundle:

1: An interactive GOOGLE Slide with overlapping fractions that can be used to teach the concept

2: An editable GOOGLE Form activity for students to use to practice

3: A math pennant activity that doubles as math classroom décor

    4: A reference poster

Multiplying Fractions with Visual Models Interactive GOOGLE Slide

With this resource, you can easily teach fraction multiplication with the area model from afar! The GOOGLE Slide is totally interactive, allowing you to overlap fractions, type the products and simplify the answers.

There are 4 blue fractions and 5 yellow fractions, which overlap to visually show a green product region. There are built-in text boxes to then write the product and simplify it. Please see the video preview for an example of how you can use this resource with students.

Multiplying Fractions with Visual Models editable GOOGLE FORMS Activity

Students multiply fractions using visual references in this digital GOOGLE Forms activity. Because this is a digital-only activity where students cannot actually shade the area model grid to show the fraction overlap on the common denominator, I have included 2 images per problem as explained below.

A problem's first image presents the fraction multiplication problem and a blank area model grid to help students visualize the problem. There are 2 short-answer questions to go along with this image:

1: What is the product of these two fractions?

    2: Simplify your fraction answer.

Next, a color image where the grid is shaded to show the multiplication is presented with a multiple-choice question:

3: Looking at the picture, does the boxed region represent your answer?

Students can either choose: "Yes, it does!" or "No, I will go back and try again". The Google Form allows students to go back to revise answers.

My hope is that the problems presented this way will help walk students through the necessary steps and encourage critical thinking. If you want to set up the activity in a different way, the Google Form is editable.

Included are 20 fraction multiplication problems, a teacher directions sheet, editable student directions in the form, the editable Google Form and a PDF answer key.

    Multiplying Fractions Math Pennant Activity

Students multiply fractions with the area model by showing the areas of both fractions (and their intersection) on a common denominator grid. Students then simplify their fractions and write their answers in the boxes on each math pennant.

Once a pennant is complete, it can be hung along a string in your classroom to show the world that, "Hey, we know how to multiply fractions!"

Included are 20 pennants with fraction multiplication problems, an optional student answer sheet and an answer key. Each group of students can be given a set of pennants, crayons, scissors and either glue, tape or a stapler. Students can be in charge of cutting out the pennants. Groups can compete to see which group can complete the most pennants or your entire class can add pennants to one string as they complete each one.
