How do students multiply & divide by powers of 10 on the place value chart?

  1. Students place their fingers on the place value chart for the given number (I start with 2.4 so I place two fingers on the ones and the tenths places.)
  2. Students determine if the digits will shift right for division or shift left for multiplication (I am multiplying so my number will getting bigger or shifting left on the place value chart.)
  3. Students determine how many places they will shift based on the power of 10. (I am multiplying by 100 which is like multiplying by 10 twice. The two zeros tell me this. I will shift two places to the left.)
  4. Students move their fingers on the place value chart and then copy down their product. (When I shift two places to the left my number changes from 2.4 to 240.)
